Stress and Depression are beyond epidemic frequencies
in most of the "modern world."
My Friend Dr. Ron White in Australia says there are three helpful
approaches:
First, change your environment:
* Reduce noise and aggravation at work or change jobs,
* Get a divorce,
* Take a vacation.
These all certainly have their limitations!
Second, Change your ability to Cope"
This could mean several things:
* Eat more leafy greens to boost calcium intake
* Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi all calm the mind, which calms the body
* Yoga Breathing, or belly breathing, calms the body, which calms
the mind
* Go for walks before bed to burn off free floating stress hormones
* Get physically fit (fit people can handle more stress)
* Talk to someone about what is stressing you, clarify which are
realistic stressors.

Third, "Change our perception of both environment and yourself!"
* This may be the hardest but carries most promise for us modern
folks!
* Our perception of ourselves may be causing undue stress.
* We may carry habits of blaming ourselves unduly when bad things
happen.
*Also, many habitually disown due credit when good things happen.
These contribute to a general increase in pessimism
and guardedness about ourselves in the world.
* This pessimism can build over time and lead to depression.
* It is tragic because childhood habits cause us to talk ourselves
into it!
* If you suspect you are doing this, you may wish to take the Optimism
Survey in Socrates' Room
* You might wish to check out other causes of feeling unduly stressed.
* Other quizzes in Socrates' Room may be more helpful and we plan
to add items on anxiety, depression, burnout and such.
