A creative dynamic, with potential for disaster!
Metaphors will keep it simple, although quantum
physics and the new biology can inform you, if you think these simple
analogies do not apply to human beings!
In high school, resonance was called sympathetic vibration. If you
strike middle E on the piano, and if your guitar is tuned properly,
the guitar strings will vibrate "in sympathy" with the
piano. Here, having the guitar tuned properly means having both
middle E strings singing the same note.
Before we move away from that word sympathy, it is very different
from Empathy. In Sympathy, your sadness makes me sad! It is no comfort
to you if your sadness makes me sad. In empathy, I can feel your
sadness but it is not my sadness, I feel. It is your sadness! If
I understand your sadness, that understanding can be helpful.

Returning to resonance, if the guitar is
slightly out of tune, it loses its ability to vibrate in sympathy
with the piano. If it is only out a little, we can hear a sort of
throbbing our pulsing.
The more "out" the guitar is, the shorter the pulse until
it just can't sing with the piano any more. Musicians tune the strings
to get longer and longer pulses.
We could say "in tune" or "in phase" is just
one long throb. "In phase" is the term used when making
a laser. An ordinary electric lamp (say 100 watts) has the light
"out of phase." However, when the electric light from
that lamp can be made to pulse "in phase," that light,
in a laser beam, becomes strong enough to cut through a steel plate!
Now, it may be a stretch to suggest that people can vibrate in and
out of phase with one another like musical instruments but perhaps
we can reach that understanding without the elegance of quantum
science.
