How does Sounding Board Work?
Our unique secure chat-rooms allow You to reflect
with us. You turn vague ideas into workable options. We suspend judgment
to protect these young new ideas. No need to wait for return e-mail
or travel from home or office to "get closure." We are alive, yet
secure on the net! Ready for an
appointment?
We are proud to offer trained helpers
who refuse to buy into the normal "troubleshooting" mentality. We
understand that the creative problem solving process has four stages:
1. What's happening? (listen hard)
2. Search for ideas. (Defer judgment)
3. Ah-ha! "The penny drops."
4. Reality test. Is it workable? Only this stage benefits from critical
analysis!
If you would like to see where the Sounding
Board style fits in the General Scheme of Adult Learning.
Is It Worth Paying For?
One of the greatest hazards,
in a trouble shooting society is that criticism is lethal to ideas.
"Half-baked" ideas get wasted before they are fully "cooked." If
it were not for this tendency, we would have very few problems with
people. Our staff have overcome this harmful habit. Newborn ideas
need protection and nurture until they are ready for testing!
Cost of Adversarial Styles: Our sciences
have made great gains because of a critical analysis style of testing
ideas, but at a cost! Yet, in education, teachers and parents are
NOT careful to distinguish "the challenge of ideas" from "defeating
ideas." Of course, children learn this adversarial style as a game,
cruel as it might be. Competition in games gets transferred to life
experience. Criticism, thus, becomes an automatic reaction. But,
this habit kills creativity in conversation. It also makes people
feel unsafe while discussing their newborn ideas, which have not
yet been nurtured into useful shape.

Or, is Counselling for You?
The signal is an uncomfortable feeling about
some aspect of your life. This could be mild or severe. Accurate empathy
is added to Sounding board's non-critical style to encourage a lot
of exploration. We share the detective work of discovering what's
back of the feeling. Then Your own objectives take over! Skill is
required! And it is worth paying for. Ready
for an appointment?
Good counselling comes in three phases:
1. Exploration is encouraged because your helper is responding
to your needs not the usual social need to diagnose.
2. Understanding is encouraged as a theme emerges. Often quite
new information.
3. Action can be taken with encouraged commitment and suggestions.
Counselling is only mysterious because society solves problems by
critical analysis and only a small minority consciously use the creative
process in their lives!
What about therapy?
We don't offer therapy because therapy promises
some change. Change is always in the hands of the client anyway!
Yet, when the change doesn't occur, the modern climate suggests
some legal action. This adversarial stance violates the general
philosophy of Adult education and Counselling. Some forms of "therapy"
are really adult education anyway. In this case, Your sense of direction
and commitment is the main thing.
Therapy, like counselling, starts with exploring
what is back of some uncomfortable feelings. Like detectives, we
see feelings as clues to hidden conflicts. In Dr. Blythe's specialty,
Logotherapy, Paul believes the conflict is between an inner urge
to express a deeper meaning and purpose in life. Often that's what
is missing in the person's daily experience. Yet, sometimes sunset
is therapeutic!
